Exploring Derbyshire

I got up planning on doing part of a scenic drive through the Peak District in Derbyshire. I had purchased a book detailing a variety of scenic drives all over Great Britain, and it seemed to have a lot of good information. I quickly found the problem with doing scenic drives in the UK. They almost all utilize the secondary roads to one extent or another. Nothing wrong with this, since the views are usually quite nice, but it can be difficult to find the required turns.

I quickly demonstrated this by missing a turn and going south west instead of northwest as I intended. This did bring me to Carsington Water, a large fairly new resevoir in Derbyshire. It was a nice place for a walk, and from appearances, a good place to spend a day outdoors, either in the water or walking on the shore. But I had place to go, so had to settle for a short walk along the shore before heading north.

Once I determined which direction I needed to go, I headed north, to a site mentioned in the scenic drive book, Haddon Hall. Visiting there showed that while they may pick difficult routes, the writers knew where to stop. I spent a couple of hours there, and could have easily spent a couple more.

After my tour of the past, I headed to Buxton to look around and book a bed for the night. I did not have problems with missing turns on this trip, then again, it was on a fairly major road. Buxton was a nice town, with an interesting history as a spa town. And the water there does taste quite good.

From there, it was north to Carlisle, where I stayed in another very nice B & B. Again, the people in the Tourist Information office thought that my going all the way to Glasgow by Wednesday morning was quite a trip. This happened quite often on my trip.

Recommendations:

  • Carsington Water - An active tourist area, with lots of outdoor activities of all kinds available.
  • Haddon Hall - A look at how some people lived centuries ago. Well worth the time. And pick up the guide book at the ticket office. It is well worth the money.
